May 7, 2012 - 10:17

Almost all wineries have completed harvest and the preliminary crop estimate is 1,324, 876 tonnes. This is 1.4% higher than 2011, which equates to about 1,000 Million Litres. Since 2003, the harvest has fluctuated between 1.2 Million Tons and 1.4 Million Tons per year. Pricing on all varietals remains stable.

SA Harvest Delayed, but Looking Positive

April 10, 2012 - 11:42

Harvest conditions remain favorable as most wineries pass the halfway mark of harvest. A larger crop is expected in most of the bigger bulk wine areas but some coastal areas like Swartland and Stellenbosch are expecting a smaller crop. Total harvest will be finished by mid to end of April. A longer ripening period and therefore longer harvest is the norm for all wine growing areas, which has delayed the end of harvest by 10 to 14 days. Favorable conditions for good wine production have persisted through harvest.

2012 Vintage Looking Good

March 7, 2012 - 10:51

Excellent ripening and harvesting conditions persist. A good quality crop with a slight increase in size is expected. The harvest is about two weeks later than last year due to cooler conditions earlier in the season. All wineries have now started their 2012 harvest.

2012 Harvest Has Started Well

February 13, 2012 - 16:37

Wineries are getting ready for the 2012 harvest that will be in full swing by the first week of February for most wine producing areas. Warm conditions in the latter part of January sped up the ripening period and a good to average crop is expected for 2012, with high quality wines given the favourable ripening season.

SA Gears Up for 2012 Vintage

January 13, 2012 - 10:22

As summer holidays come to a close, most South African wineries will be up and running by January 9 to prepare for the 2012 harvest. The harvest looks very promising at the moment with no significant quality or volume problems to speak of.
Local wine consumption grew from 2% to 4% over the past six months. The harvest is expected to be 4% higher than in 2010. It is still early in the season, but good growing conditions persist. Many South African wineries are holding larger inventories compared to the same period last year. Producers are still in survival mode due to the rising cost of
production, while bulk prices remain stable. The hope is that changes in the exchange rate over the last 3 months will bring better income to them.

Market in a Flurry of Activity

December 19, 2011 - 10:13

With the end of the year in sight and annual summer holidays on the way, many wineries are trying to draw down as much remaining volume as possible. This, coupled with the SA Rand weakening by 20% in the last 3 months, is responsible for some interesting spot deals for South African wine.

Wine Prices Stabilize, But For How Long?

November 8, 2011 - 10:01

The Rand exchange rate, speculation about 2011 carry-over stock, 2012 stock levels and future pricing are the hottest topics since the Rand weakened substantially in September, recovering partially to stabilize around the R8.00/US$ & R11.00/Euro mark. Current expectations are stability at R7.50+ per US$ over the next few months. For now, pricing is stable and stock levels are in balance for reds, while white stocks remain high. Export shipments slowed down in September and October and 2012 harvest for South Africa hinges on a combination of factors, namely: exchange rates, the lower 2011 crop yields in most Northern Hemisphere countries and how these factors effect SA’s main New World competitors: Australia and Chile.

SA Rand in Fluctuation

October 14, 2011 - 16:30

The South African Rand has weakened substantially against all major currencies since the end of August. Over the past 3 weeks it declined 22.2% against the US Dollar, but has since recovered to its current position - still 10.8% weaker than the end of August. This has resulted in more competitive export-pricing on both SA bulk and bottled wines in foreign currency terms.
