International Buyers Actively Seeking Bulk Wines
July 6, 2011 - 00:26
An excellent 2011 vintage has created high demand from buyers around the world. The new star of Argentina is Moscatel, with 9 million liters already sold to US buyers. Several wineries are closing deals at decent prices, but still struggling with the inflation. Demand for Malbec is growing daily both domestically and internationally, with prices starting at USD 1.50/L and going up to 2.50/L.

French Bulk Market Remains Short
June 8, 2011 - 02:12
The bulk market remains tight and the only loads available are “resale” parcels. The first 2 weeks of May loadings lagged, but by the end of the month had picked up to a fast-paced rhythm. The unofficial end-of-May loading figures show a 20% increase over last year. The weather has been playing havoc with 2 large hail storms occurring at the end of April in Sauternes (480ha) and Corbières (1800ha) regions. Compared to the May report, it appears a water deficit exists in the Languedoc which has moved from worrisome to serious (most vineyards are not irrigated). Other French regions (South West, Center and North) have been on alert for the past few months.

Spanish High Demand for Pre-2011 Harvest Contracts
June 8, 2011 - 02:11
The tables have turned! Spanish producers find themselves in a dominant selling position after years of over-supply and low prices. There is uncertainty on how 2011 prices will respond to increased international demand, given the available volumes with slight price increases expected. Even though the first pre-harvest contract for 2011 vintage has been created, most producers are waiting until mid/end of June to confirm pricing.

Domestic and International Programs Contracting Wines Early
June 8, 2011 - 02:10
Early contracting of all wines, both local and international, is well underway and shipment of 2011 vintage bulk wines has already started. The last of the red wines are busy with malolactic fermentation and general quality of all wine is good. The pricing on all varietals has gone up by 5-10% from the 2010 vintage, however pricing is stable at the moment. It is predicted that availability on all red varietals will be short, due to the large volumes currently being contracted. 2011 white wine availability is fairly stable.

Italian Wine Exports Growing in Popularity
June 8, 2011 - 02:09
Italian wines continue to experience success in the USA due mostly to a competitive price:quality ratio, but also to changing consumption and economic recovery. This trend could lead to smaller stocks before the next harvest, making price increases a certainty for some wines. A total of 22 million hectoliters of wine was exported from Italy, mostly to the French and US markets. Overall, the Italian market remains firm, with stabilization for certain varietals, such as Bardolino and Valpolicella. Spumante export sales increased 17%, mostly to Russia. Wine exports to China increased by more than 1000% compared to January 2010!

Only small Parcels of Bulk Wine Remain
June 8, 2011 - 02:08
German Wines:
Will it get any worse?! After a perfect bud break, thousands of hectares have been damaged by an early May frost. It is still unclear how this will change the total size of the 2011 crop, but for affected growers it’s a disaster.
Import Market:
Unusually large volumes of the 2011 vintage have already been contracted. As predicted in the last report, almost all wine prices around the globe have increased. The big question: How will higher shelf prices affect consumption in the long run?

Smaller Crop Leads to Higher Prices and Higher Quality Grapes
June 8, 2011 - 02:08
The harvest is almost complete, but some of the cooler regions will not finish until the middle of June. The smaller than average yield was consistent in all regions, and expectations are for a crop down more than 15% from last year. Bulk wine sales have been active, and pricing has steadily increased over the past several months.

Continued Activity in Bulk Wine and Grape Markets
June 8, 2011 - 02:06
The California market remains active for both wine and grapes. Driven by continued optimism and sales growth, wineries are aggressively sourcing future inventory requirements. These commitments come earlier than in past years and prior to firm indications of the upcoming 2011 crop level. All premium red wines continue to sell at strong pricing levels. Both value and luxury wine programs have continued to drive this activity. Grape sales have continued in all regions of California. Concerns and the reality of the April frost on our Central Coast have fueled additional commitments around the state.

Inventories of Older Vintages are Rapidly Decreasing
June 8, 2011 - 02:05
An active domestic market has driven market pricing closer to pre/mid-harvest prices. The industry is still undecided on the harvest size, with estimates varying between 1.3 and 1.6 million tons. However, it is unlikely these figures will accurately represent wine volume in tank, due to plentiful concentrate production this year. The 2011 vintage challenge is to identify available bulk parcels that are comparable to 2010 quality specifications.
New Zealand : Pinot Noir is still difficult to obtain in significant volume, however samples confirm good quality 2011 Sauvignon Blanc.

2011 Harvest is Up by 10.4% and Concentrate Production by 62%
June 8, 2011 - 02:04
The 2011 harvest has finished with success and the total volume was 2.87 million tons, which is 2.5 % above the average. Pricing has remained stable because the 2011 crop is similar in size to 2010. Bulk Malbec from 2011 is readily available, as buyers have been hesitant to accept the current pricing. The average alcohol for whites is 13% and 13.5% for reds. The ripeness of the tannins and quality is excellent. Both domestic and export markets are slow due to the pricing.
