More About Australian Wine

Australia’s wine industry is known as the fifth largest exporter, globally.  Nearly 780 million liters are exported per year, while only about 40% of production is consumed within the country. Australia's wine industry is a significant contributor to the country’s economy due to its production, exports, tourism and employment. Wine regions within these states produce various wines that leverage climatic differences, soil types, and topography. Pinot noir, Riesling, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon blanc, Merlot, Semillon, and Chardonnay are major varieties that are predominant.  The name of the country's grape variety will typically label the wine name, which needs to constitute 85 percent of the wine or more.

Australia’s largest wine production volume is from grapes grown in the Murray-Darling Basin zones of Lower Murray,  Big Rivers and North Western Victoria. These are known as warmer climates in general, with the premium wine production occurring in the smaller, cooler producing regions.
